RIVER BEACHES

There are many fantastic river beaches in easy driving distance. One of our favourites Agroal, located in the middle section of the Nabão River, in the parish of Formigais. In an area of great natural beauty, it’s possible to swim here both in the river and in the man made pool that runs with natural water from the rocks above. There is parking available, as well as small cafes and shops to serve visitors.

LOCAL CULTURE AND CELEBRATIONS

The ‘Festa dos Tabuleiros’ takes place every four years, and is held in the main square of Tomar. This festival is an ancient tradition dating back to the 13th century, and is most celebrated event in the city. A riot of colour and energy, the Festival comes to life as locals parade in pairs, with the girls carrying ‘tabuleiros’ on their heads, decorated with bread and flowers.

TOMAR

Praça da República is Tomar's central square with a central statue of Gualdim Paes. The square is ringed by a number of elegant 17th century buildings, cafes and the old town hall. Our favourite spot in the square is Café dos Artistas, where you can sit in the sunshine with an espresso and traditional Portuguese dessert, with views across the whole square, including the 16th century Igreja de São João Baptista church.

TOMAR CASTLE, Castelo de Tomar

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tomar Castle and the Convent of Christ are one of the most beautiful and breathtaking Portuguese historical monuments. Guests can explore the castle, Renaissance cloisters, gardens and church. This historic site is a labyrinth of corridors and courtyards, and we recommend setting aside half a day to meander throughout.
